Mountain Creek Expands Wildlife Stewardship Efforts with Squirrel Support Initiative
VERNON, NJ — Following a record-setting winter season, Mountain Creek Resort today announced an expansion of its Alpine Wildlife Stewardship Program, with a new focus on supporting local squirrel populations.
Over the past several seasons, the resort has closely followed what staff have come to refer to as “squirrel indicators”—a lighthearted but increasingly reliable signal tied to winter conditions.
“Over the past year, we’ve seen a noticeable rise in squirrel population and overall mountain activity,” said Jackie Cerra, Resort Marketing Manager “It became clear that we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to coexist more intentionally.”
As part of this initiative, Mountain Creek will begin serving as a community-supported drop-off point for injured or displaced squirrels, in coordination with regional wildlife rehabilitation partners.
Guests and local residents who encounter squirrels in need are encouraged to contact the resort for guidance before transport.

A dedicated space featuring an animal clinic, release enclosure, and monitoring zone designed to support rehabilitation, safe release, and ongoing observation of local squirrel populations.
Additional program elements include:
- Staff training on safe wildlife interaction and handling protocols
- Increased on-mountain awareness signage
- Ongoing monitoring of squirrel activity across key areas of the resort
- New trail traffic signs to allow for safe squirrel passings on the ski and bike trails
- Squirrel habitat slow skiing and riding zones and early closures to allow for uninterrupted squirrel mating season
While the program is rooted in environmental responsibility, it also reflects the resort’s appreciation for a species that has become an unexpected symbol of recent winters.
“They’ve been part of the story, especially coming off of a record breaking winter, like we just had” Cerra added. “This is just our way of returning the favor.”
More information will be shared in the coming weeks as the initiative rolls out.
